Grilled sausage and onions is a classic duo that’s just so reliably delicious! Sweet yellow onions are ideal because they cook quickly and taste almost caramelized when grilled. This dish is super easy to make and can be prepared on a whim if needed. Sausage and onions both have bold flavors that play off each other well and require little else. That’s why it’s so easy to throw this together in a bun.

This is a quick and easy dish for potlucks, picnics, or an average weeknight around the dinner table with the family. It also requires few dishes and equipment so clean-up should be a breeze. If you want, you could even grill bell peppers to put on top of the sausage and onion!

You can also add desired toppings like sauerkraut or mustard on top — But the taste of the simply grilled onions and sausage seasoned with a small sprinkle of Private Seasoning Rub is enough to complete the hoagie. Toast the bun, if desired, and be sure to serve these hot and fresh.

Ingredients

  • 2 Italian sausages

  • 1 sweet onion, sliced into thick rings

  • 1 tsp avocado or olive oil

  • 1 tbsp Private Seasoning Rub

  • 2 sausage buns of choice - we used pretzel buns

Directions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium heat, approximately 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Place the sausages and sliced onions in a baking dish or plate and drizzle the onions with oil.

  3. Sprinkle approximately 1 tsp Private Seasoning on each sausage and 1 tsp over the sliced onions, flipping the onions and rotating the sausages to evenly distribute the oil and seasonings.

  4. Place prepared sausages and onions on the hot grill and close the lid.

  5. Cook for 2 minutes, then rotate the sausages. After another 2 minutes, rotate the

sausages again and flip the onions. Cook for another 2 minutes, then remove the onions from the girl and turn the heat down to low.

Continue cooking the sausages on low or indirect heat for about 5 minutes, rotating often, until the sausages are cooked through to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

  1. Remove sausages from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes. Cut the onion rings in half. Assemble the hoagies by placing the sausages in the buns and topping with grilled onions. Enjoy immediately.
